Prostate Cancer Treatment
PalmdaleHigh Intensity Focused Ultrasound
Precisely target prostate cancer with HIFU, a non-invasive treatment for prostate cancer.
High Intensity
Focused Ultrasound
Utilizing advanced imaging capabilities, HIFU technology enables Urologists to precisely target the prostate with sub-millimetric accuracy, all while sparing surrounding healthy tissue and maintaining the patients’ quality of life.
HIFU
Prostate Cancer Treatment
Ablate Prostate Cancer Tissue Cells
High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) is a precise, non-invasive procedure that uses high frequency sound waves to heats up and destroy prostate cancer cells. Focused ultrasound works similarly to how a magnifying glass concentrates sunlight at a single point, causing localized heating that destroys the cells in the gland leaving the surrounding healthy tissue unharmed.
How Focused Ultrasound Works
A Precise Prostate Cancer Treatment
High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) operates by delivering high-intensity sound waves directly to the targeted region of the prostate. Utilizing an ultrasound probe, the HIFU system precisely directs these sound waves to the designated area. This method, referred to as focal therapy, involves ablation—where focused energy elevates the temperature sufficiently to destroy cells within the treatment zone while preserving surrounding healthy tissue.
HIFU is FDA approved in the United States since December 2015 and continues to be a viable option among therapies for prostate cancer.
HIFU Procedure
Steps to focused ultrasound prostate cancer therapy
HIFU technology allows for an outpatient procedure that typically takes between 45 minutes and an hour and a half to perform, so patients can expect to return home in the same day and to their normal activities shortly. This means minimal time away from work, family and leisure activities.
1st
Prostate Imaging
The transrectal ultrasound imaging probe scans the entire prostate and presents a three-dimensional reconstruction of the targeted area for ablation on the HIFU system screen.
2nd
Ablation Planning
The Urologist plans each step of the procedure on the screen, focusing on the area to be treated. Advanced imaging technology is used to look at a 3D image of the prostate.
3rd
Energy Delivery
Finally, the system automatically determines the optimal number of lesions based on the planning and produces High Intensity Focused Ultrasound waves to destroy the targeted cells.
